Performances & cultural events
Seattle's only historic stage still in use since 1909.
Most venues have a platform they call a stage. Nippon Kan has the real thing — a built-in theatrical stage that has hosted Kabuki performers, jazz musicians, community celebrations, and everything in between for over a century. Whatever you're bringing to the stage, this space was made for it.

The stage
Built for performance. Ready for yours.
The Nippon Kan stage is elevated, full-width, and designed from the ground up for live performance. It comes equipped with the house theatrical lighting system, projector, microphones, and house speakers — functional the moment you walk in.
Our in-house AV technician is included with every rental. Before your event, they connect directly with your production team, walk through all inputs and connections, and make sure everything is performing exactly as it should. No last-minute surprises. No fumbling with cables during showtime.
What happens here
The options are limitless.
From intimate spoken word nights to full theatrical productions — the stage, the sightlines, and the history support whatever you're building.
Theatre & Dance
Full productions, dance recitals, experimental theatre, and everything in between. The stage was built for this.
Film screenings
The projector, screen, and theatre-style seating make Nippon Kan a natural fit for film premieres, documentary screenings, and private cinema events.
Cultural celebrations
Community gatherings, cultural festivals, heritage ceremonies, and celebrations rooted in identity and tradition. This space was built for exactly this.
Lectures & panels
Academic talks, community panels, keynote presentations, award ceremonies. The stage anchors a speaker naturally — no rental riser needed.
Fashion & runway
The elevated stage, open floor plan, and dramatic lighting make Nippon Kan a natural fit for runway shows, brand showcases, and fashion events.
Comedy & Spoken Word
Stand-up shows, improv nights, storytelling events, open mics, poetry readings. The mezzanine creates an intimate feel even for larger crowds.
Art exhibitions
Opening nights, gallery shows, immersive installations. The architecture — exposed beams, original details, tall ceilings — is a backdrop that most galleries can't buy.
Live Music & Concerts
Solo performers to full bands. The house sound system and AV tech mean your artists sound exactly as intended from the moment doors open.
Award ceremonies
Industry awards, community recognition events, nonprofit galas with a program. The stage and sightlines give these moments the weight they deserve.
This list is a starting point, not a limit. If you're imagining something that isn't here — reach out. If there's a stage and an audience involved, we want to hear about it.
A place shaped by time
More than a century of gathering.
The Nippon Kan stage was built in 1909 as a performance space for Seattle's Japanese American community — hosting Kabuki theatre, traditional dance, concerts, community meetings, and cultural celebrations that couldn't happen anywhere else in the city. It was the cultural heart of Nihonmachi, Seattle's Japantown, for over three decades.
Closed during the Japanese American internment of 1942, reopened through community effort in 1981, and thoughtfully restored in 2024 — the stage has never stopped being what it was built to be. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2024, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell declared May 23 Nippon Kan Theatre Day.
When you perform here, you perform where Kabuki masters, jazz musicians, community leaders, and countless others stood before you.
