Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you reach out.

We've answered the questions we hear most often — about the space, booking, vendors, parking, and more. If something isn't here, we're always happy to talk through it directly.

The space

How big is Nippon Kan Theatre?

The venue is over 10,000 square feet across the main theatre floor and mezzanine level. It can accommodate up to 300 seated guests for a dinner or reception, up to 400 in theatre-style seating, and up to 460 for a standing or cocktail-style event depending on layout.

What spaces are included in my rental?

Your rental includes access to the main theatre floor, mezzanine, lobby, kitchenette, wedding suite and prep areas, restrooms, and 32 on-site parking stalls. The four lower-level rooms are also available for vendor setup and catering operations.

What furniture and equipment is included?

Every rental includes 364 white folding chairs, 99 black folding chairs, 28 round dining tables (60"), 6 banquet tables (72"), 7 cocktail tables, projector, microphones, house speakers, theatrical stage lighting, heating and air conditioning, and on-site parking. Additional AV technician and security services are also included.

Can we host both a ceremony and reception at Nippon Kan?

Yes — many couples host their full wedding day in one space. The open floor plan transitions naturally between ceremony and reception, and we work with you on the layout and flow during planning so the day feels seamless.

What does the stage include?

The built-in theatrical stage comes with the house lighting system, projector, microphones, and house speakers. If you're bringing in a DJ or live act, our in-house AV technician connects directly with your entertainment ahead of time to walk through all inputs and make sure everything is dialed in before guests arrive.

Is Nippon Kan a good venue for small or intimate weddings?

Yes — the space scales well in both directions. For smaller gatherings of 40–80 guests, the mezzanine and main floor can be configured to feel intentionally intimate rather than underfilled.

Can we do a micro-wedding or elopement at Nippon Kan?

Yes — we're happy to host intimate ceremonies and small celebrations. Reach out and we'll put together something that fits your scale and vision.

Booking & pricing

How does pricing work?

Every quote is custom — rates vary based on day of the week, season, event type, and duration. There is no one-size-fits-all pricing. When you reach out, we learn about your event and put together a proposal built around your actual needs.
Most clients invest between $4,950 and $7,750 for weddings.

How far in advance should we book?

As early as possible — especially for weekends, peak wedding season (May through October), and end-of-year events. Our calendar fills quickly and early booking gives you the best flexibility on dates, planning timelines, and vendor coordination.

How does payment work?

A 30% non-refundable deposit secures your date. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to your event. Payment plans may be available upon request — reach out and we're happy to work through the details.

How long is a typical rental?

Rental windows are flexible. Most events are booked as full-day or multi-day rentals. Midweek hourly rentals may also be available depending on the calendar. Your rental time covers setup, event, and teardown.

Can I tour the space before booking?

Yes — we offer private tours by appointment, both in person and virtually. Touring the space is the best way to understand the layout, lighting, and flow firsthand. Schedule a tour here.

Is Nippon Kan available for weekday weddings or weekday events?

Yes — we book events during the week. Weekday rentals are often available at different rates. Reach out and we'll share current availability and pricing.

Vendors & catering

Can we bring our own vendors?

Yes. Nippon Kan operates an open vendor policy — you are welcome to bring any licensed and insured caterer, planner, florist, photographer, videographer, DJ, or decorator. We also maintain a curated preferred vendor list and are happy to make warm introductions.

Do you have a preferred caterer?

We work closely with Chomp! Foods as our featured catering partner — a PNW-rooted, full-service catering team with deep familiarity with the Nippon Kan. You are also welcome to bring your own licensed and insured caterer.

What are the vendor requirements?

All vendors must be licensed and carry proof of liability insurance. Vendors should coordinate load-in times and logistics with us in advance. If you're not sure whether your vendor meets requirements, reach out and we'll help you confirm.

What are vendor load-in and load-out times?

Load-in and load-out are coordinated during the planning process based on your rental window. All personal and event items must be removed by the end of your contracted rental time. Let us know in advance if you need additional time.

Do you have a preferred vendor list?

Yes — our complete preferred vendor list covers catering, entertainment, photography, florals, rentals, beauty, and more.

Day of event

Will someone from Nippon Kan be there on the day?

Yes. A dedicated venue representative will be on site throughout your entire rental to support the flow of your event, ensure venue policies are followed, and serve as your point of contact for any venue-related needs on the day.

Who handles setup and teardown?

We handle layout prep — your approved floor plan is set before your event begins. Your vendors are responsible for bringing in and removing their own equipment and supplies. General cleaning (sweeping, mopping, restrooms) is included in your rental.

Is there a curfew?

There is no hard curfew inside the venue. We do abide by Seattle noise ordinance laws. Alcohol service must stop at the locally mandated time. End times for your event are outlined in your rental agreement.

Do you have a wedding suite or prep area?

Yes. The theatre includes a wedding suite and prep areas — private spaces to get ready, gather your team, and take a moment before the event begins. These are well suited for wedding parties, performers, speakers, and event teams.

Parking & access

Is there parking at the venue?

Yes — 32 private on-site parking stalls are included with every rental. This is genuinely uncommon for a downtown Seattle venue. We recommend reserving these for VIP guests, your wedding party, speakers, or anyone who truly needs proximity. Additional paid lots are available nearby on S. Washington Street and surrounding blocks.

How do guests get here without a car?

The venue is within walking distance of the International District / Chinatown Link Light Rail station — connecting directly from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Major bus lines and rideshare drop-off along S. Washington Street are also convenient. We recommend including a Google Maps pin to 628 S. Washington Street in all guest communications.

Is shuttle service available?

Yes — we work with Butler Transportation for professional valet and custom shuttle routes between hotels and the venue. This is one of the best upgrades you can offer guests, especially since the venue sits at the top of a hill.

What's the closest hotel to Nippon Kan Theatre?

Hotel Sorrento is our preferred hotel partner and is approximately 0.3 miles away — and was built the same year as the Nippon Kan (1909). We have an exclusive arrangement with preferred rates for our clients. Embassy Suites by Hilton Pioneer Square, Courtyard Seattle Downtown, and Silver Cloud Hotel Stadium are also within half a mile.

Alcohol & permits

Can we serve alcohol at our event?

Yes. Alcohol service is permitted with a licensed bartender and a required Washington State banquet permit. Proof of insurance is required. Our team can help guide you through the permitting and planning process to make sure everything is handled properly well ahead of your event date. We recommend starting the permit process at least six weeks out.

Do you have a preferred bar service?

We work with several excellent bar and beverage vendors. You are also welcome to bring your own licensed bartender.

Accessibility

Is Nippon Kan Theatre ADA accessible?

Due to the historic nature of the building, Nippon Kan Theatre is not fully ADA accessible. The venue involves multiple stairways leading to the theatre, lobby, and restrooms, and elevator access is not available. We take this seriously and encourage you to reach out well in advance of your event so we can discuss your guests' specific needs and explore every possible accommodation thoughtfully.
